We're supporting Keep Britain Tidy in their mission to change how we think about waste. While recycling is a great start, and many of us already do it regularly, we can go one better. It's time to Swap the Way You Shop!

That means thinking twice before buying something brand new. Could you borrow it? Swap it? Rent it? Buy it second-hand? Buying less doesn’t mean going without, it just means being a bit more creative! Here are some smart, simple ways to get started:

  1. Borrow from friends or family

Need a drill for one quick job? A fancy outfit for a night out? Books, tools, toys, clothes, etc. can often be borrowed from our friends and family. It saves money, reduces clutter, and helps the planet.

  1. Use your local library
Fed up with books gathering dust on your shelf after reading them? Consider using your local library instead to borrow books. Many libraries also loan out other items such as audiobooks, magazines, and films, so be sure to check what services they provide.

  2. Use tool rental services or community tool banks

This is great for those odd jobs where you require a certain tool not in your toolbox. This is often cheaper than buying new and don’t have the hassle of finding somewhere to store it in your house.

  1. Rent an outfit

Got a special occasion coming up? Why not rent an outfit instead of buying a brand new one? From prom outfits, to wedding dresses and suits, to designer outfits, many companies offer rental options that are more cost effective.

  1. Buy pre-loved

If you do need to buy something, consider looking at pre-loved/second-hand options first. This can be through online marketplaces (such as eBay, Vinted, Facebook Marketplace) or charity shops.

Small Swaps, Big Impact
By choosing to borrow, rent, or buy pre-loved, you're not only saving money, but you’re also helping reduce waste and lower carbon emissions too. Every little swap adds up to a more sustainable future.

So next time you're shopping and thinking of buying new, pause for a second... and swap the way you shop.
