Many of us only wear a small fraction of the clothes we own. The rest? Often sit untouched in our drawers and wardrobes.

By rotating the clothes we already own, we are less tempted to buy new items of clothing – saving us money, resources, and our planet.

What Is Wardrobe Rotation?

Wardrobe rotation is the practice of changing which clothes in our wardrobe are in easy reach. This is usually based on seasons but can be rotated by style, occasions, or whatever we want, as well.

How To Rotate Your Wardrobe:

See What You’ve Got
The first step is to see what we actually have in your closet. It’s a great time to rediscover forgotten outfits!

Declutter

Remove any clothes that are no longer needed, are beyond repair, are no longer your style or that don’t fit you anymore. You can donate, sell, pass them on, or recycle them.

Organise Into Categories

Sort by seasons or occasion for ease. Keep your staple pieces (the clothes you wear most often) to one side.

Store Away Properly

Preserve your clothes when they are not in use so that they last longer.

  • Clean and dry clothes before storing away and store and in a cool dry place to avoid mildew or mould.

  • Use vacuum sealed bags to save space while storing away clothes.

  • Make sure that woollen garments are folded not hanged up as they can become stretched.

  • Labelling storage boxes, bins and bags will help you quickly find and access the right items once it is time for a rotation.

Keep it Tidy

Regularly check your clothes and review what clothes you have. Try to have ‘a one in one out’ system to keep your wardrobe manageable.

Organise and keep your wardrobe tidy to ensure that you make the most of the space you have.

Why Should We Reduce Clothes Waste?

The amount of clothes that ends up in our bins is growing mainly due to the rise of fast fashion and cheap low-quality clothing. This is having an impact on our planet at all stages of the supply chain and is contributing to increased waste and more carbon emissions. By keeping our clothes useful for longer, we can all help reduce this.
