A Quarter of Christmas Jumpers Are Worn Once, Then Thrown Away – Here’s How to Change That

Every year in the UK, around 12 million new Christmas jumpers are purchased, according to environmental charity Hubbub. Around a quarter of these are only worn once before being thrown away. With Christmas jumper day just around the corner, Thursday 12th December, why not choose a more sustainable option for your festive knitwear?

Re-wear one you already own
Did you know that an estimated two thirds of us already own at least one Christmas jumpers stashed away in our wardrobes? So why not bring them out for another wear! This year. Re-wearing your jumper not only saves money but helps reduce waste this Christmas.


Buy second-hand
Skip the busy high street and hunt for a pre-loved treasure in charity shops or on online marketplaces. This way you can pick up a jumper at the fraction of the cost of a new one. Also, if you have one you no longer want, why not donate or sell it?


DIY a jumper
If you are feeling crafty this festive season, why not DIY your own Christmas jumper using a jumper you already own. Add temporary embellishments and decorations to make your own unique festive creation that is guaranteed to stand out at any Christmas party!


Do a swap
This could be with friend, family, at work, or within the community. Children will most likely outgrow their previous years jumper. You could hold a Christmas jumper stall at your school’s Christmas fair or pass it on to other parents through local Facebook groups. It’s a great way to get a new-to-you jumper for no cost and minimal effort!
