8 things you can borrow instead of buying

There are many things that we only need for a short period of time.

So, to save money and help the environment, why not rent/hire/borrow these things instead?

borrow not buy: books at library, bicycles, tools and DIY equipment, cutlery. crockery and glassware for special occasions.
  1. Books

Are you a bookworm? Why not borrow books from your local library instead of buying new copies. Alternatively, you could host a swap between your friends and family to share your favourite reads.

 

  1. Tools

The average drill is only used for 13 minutes in its lifetime! So why not hire one instead? This can save you money, save space and is great for when you need a particular tool for a DIY project that will only take a short period of time.

 

  1. Entertainment

Save space on your shelves buy renting and streaming movies and video games instead of buying physical copies.

For films and TV shows, this can be from your local library or through a streaming service like Netflix, YouTube, Disney plus and Amazon Prime.

You can also subscribe to video game streaming services, so you can play as many games as you want on your favourite platform for a monthly fee.

 

  1. Clothes

Got a special occasion coming up and want a new look? Why not rent an outfit instead of buying a new one! You can hire outfits for most occasions including wedding dresses, suits and tuxedos and prom dresses.  You can also hire designer clothes, handbags and accessories for a fraction of their cost.

Alternatively, why not borrow an outfit from a friend or family member?

  1. Decorations

If you are having a party, you can hire the decorations to make your special occasion even more special and brighten up the venue.  

 

  1. Glassware and crockery

Great for if you’re hosting an event or just having lots of people round. Saves space in your cupboard and costs less than buying brand new items. Try searching for glass and crockery loans in your area or check out your local supermarket.

 

  1. Transport

Going on a trip? You can hire all sorts of transportation including cars, camper vans, mountain bikes, electric bikes, electric scooters and even boats!

 

  1. Real nappies

Something a bit more unusual but if you are a parent and want to try reusable nappies before you commit to buying your little ones their own set, you can borrow them from your local nappy library.
