Barnsley, Doncaster and Rotherham

Want a new look? If you are a resident of Barnsley, Doncaster or Rotherham we are challenging you to show off your second-hand style and give some old clothes a brand-new feel. Enter to be in with a chance of winning a share of £3,000!

What is the Second-Hand Style Challenge?

The challenge is to create outfits made completely from second-hand clothes, to fit the categories below. You can pick just one category that speaks to you most, or even all five – the choice is yours. The categories are as follows:

Time to Party: Whether it’s a big night out or a kitchen disco, we’re looking for stand-out party pieces.

Job Interview: This could be a classic combo of smart shirts and tailored pieces, or something more specific if you have a particular job in mind.

Wedding Guest: Will you go black tie, semi-formal, or even show off some traditional cultural attire?

Festival Fashion: From the fields of Glastonbury to Download, or even a folklore festival, just tell us your inspiration!

Cosy Day In: Your cosiest loungewear for a chilled day in.

The clothing and accessories must be second-hand. Read on for our recommendations on where to shop.

What do I need to do?

You’ll need to create and photograph or video your second-hand outfit/s. This could be on yourself, someone else, on a mannequin, or even laid out flat. If you do choose to lay the outfit out, please make sure it is clear and cohesive so we can see what it would look like on a person. You will need to provide a breakdown of the sources and costs of each piece, as well as the thought behind the outfit. For example, tell us which festival you have in mind, what job you would be interviewing for, what type of party, etc. Your entry could be in video format or photos with captions. Please read the terms and conditions for information about photographic consent. See below for some examples of what to submit.

If you’re showing off the outfit on yourself or someone else, make sure the photo or video shows off the whole look. It could be a mirror selfie, someone else could take the photo, or you could stand your phone up somewhere to record. Make sure to include captions or a voiceover to explain the details of your outfit. See an example photo below.

If you’re laying your outfit flat, use this photo as guidance. The outfit is laid out in the order it would be worn, so it looks cohesive and we can see what it would look like on. Shoes and accessories are also added in roughly the place they would be worn.

The photo below is an example of what not to submit. It is the same outfit as above, but we miss a lot of detail such as the shape of the jeans, the full print of the t-shirt, and the overall flow of the outfit.

What are the prizes?

The total prize pot for the competition is £3,000. This is being split equally between each category, and each area (Barnsley, Doncaster and Rotherham). As there are 5 categories, the prize pot for each category is £600. There will be a Winner from each area within the category, winning a prize of £100. There will also be a Runner Up from each area within the category, winning a prize of £50. There is also an additional prize of £150 for the Overall Winner of each category (the best of the 3 area winners).

Can I win more than one prize?

Yes, you are eligible to win as many prizes as you enter for. For example, if you submit entries for 3 different categories, you are eligible to win a First Place or Runner Up prize for each one. If you’re really stylish, you could also potentially win the Overall Winner prize that combines entrants from all the areas, for each of your entries. We encourage you to enter for as many categories as you like, but of course we have sustainability in mind, so think about which outfits you would get the most use out of!

Can I use second-hand pieces that I already own?

Yes, as long as you either purchased them second-hand originally or they were given to you by someone else. However it doesn’t count as pre-loved if you bought the item brand new originally, and you’ve just had it for a long time.

What second-hand shops could I use?

You can find second-hand clothes in lots of places! Our recommendations would be:

  1. Charity shops (Find a shop · Charity Retail Association)

  2. Vintage shops

  3. Vinted

  4. Depop

  5. eBay

  6. Facebook marketplace

  7. Car boot sale

  8. Clothes swap shops

  9. Borrowed from friends/family

We look forward to seeing your entries!
